About Us

The Cairns Community Legal Centre is a Not-for-Profit, government-funded community organisation, providing accessible legal and social justice services to people in the community who are experiencing disadvantage. 

The Centre extends its service to a number of different areas, including senior support, guardianship, domestic violence, peace and good behaviour matters, consumer law, debt, motor vehicle property damage, employment, discrimination, family law, child protection, and criminal and traffic matters.

This work is provided for a diverse range of clients including seniors, people with disabilities, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds, those experiencing domestic or family violence, financial difficulties and homelessness. 

About the Opportunity

Reporting to the CEO, you will take ownership of leading the Centre’s professional team of staff and volunteers to deliver quality legal services in accordance with CCLC’s strategic initiatives and operational matters. 

As the ‘Responsible Person’ of the Centre, your focus will be on improving the overall strategic nature of the organisation as opposed to individual revenue generation. That means you can dedicate more time to maximising your impact in the community and amongst staff.

You will also ensure operations are running efficiently and maximise the centre’s impact through continuous reviews of policies and programs.

Some other day to day duties may include, but are not limited to:

  • Supervising staff and volunteer workers while maintaining best practice in the delivery of legal and support services, including information, referral, advice and ongoing casework services
  • Working closely with the Centre's CEO and Finance & Administration Manager to ensure that organisational goals and requirements are met
  • Contributing to and supporting a cooperative and productive team environment, and ensuring that the behaviour and conduct of your direct reports meets organisational expectations; and
  • Being a role model for Centre staff and volunteers, including providing ongoing guidance and support as required.

In addition you will:

  • Provide direct client and other services across the Centre's various service programs, including the provision of community education, liaison and promotional work, and law reform work; and
  • Assist in the maintenance, development and strengthening of the Centre’s professional and organisational networks and relationships.
  • Meeting with community members to discuss legal matters
  • Developing and maintaining training and induction materials for staff and volunteers
  • Being a role model for Centre staff and volunteers, including providing ongoing guidance and support as required
  • Contributing to the development of staff through feedback and assessment

About You

You will have significant experience as a practising solicitor, and hold a Bachelor's Degree in Law. Additionally, eligibility as an Australian Legal Practitioner to hold an unrestricted Practising Certificate in QLD will be necessary to be considered for this position. 

You will have demonstrated leadership experience and excellent verbal and written communication skills, which will enable you to work cooperatively with Senior Management and Centre staff to achieve quality legal services in accordance with the Centre’s strategic initiatives. 

Critical to your success in this role will also be your organisational skills and ability to manage your time effectively when faced with competing priorities and emerging demands.
